Twitter and other social media platforms have removed about 100 posts and URLs after the government asked them to remove content that criticizes the management of the current medical crisis or spreads false news about the pandemic.

Twitter said it notified affected account holders of its action in response to a legal request from the Indian government, while Facebook did not comment on the matter.

Sources said the companies complied with the order. However, it was not immediately known which posts were deleted.

Meanwhile, government sources said that the IT Ministry, on the recommendation of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, asked social media platforms to remove posts and URLs (uniform resource locators) to “avoid obstructions in the fight against the pandemic” and disrupt public order in the posts mentioned.

They added that the order was issued in view of the misuse of social platforms by certain users to spread false or misleading information and create panic about the pandemic in society “using old or out-of-context images or images or links, sensitive community messages and misguide about COVID-19 protocols ”.
