Karachi: Dozens of home-based women workers staged a protest outside Karachi Press Club against Prime Minister Imran Khan’s controversial remarks over women’s dressing.

In an interview to HBO, the prime minister had dubbed women’s clothing as a cause of rape.

Upon a question if, whether or not women’s clothing causes temptation in men and results in rape?, Imran replied: “If a woman is wearing very few clothes, it will have an impact on the men, unless they’re robots. I mean it is common sense.”

Head of Home Based Women Workers Federation Zehra Khan said that it was not the first time that premier had given such derogatory remarks on women’s dressing.

“He hurt the sentiments of millions of women in the country,” she said.
She further said that it was unbelievable that the premier was linking sexual harassment cases with women’s clothing; it reflects his prejudices against women and a tribal mindset.

Another activist Anum Khan stressed that the remarks hold no value in a society where a four-year-old is raped or where bodies of women are exhumed and sexually assaulted.

In an attempt to clarify the premier’s stance, PTI women lawmakers on Tuesday came to Imran’s rescue saying that he was being ‘misinterpreted’.

PTI lawmakers Minister of State for Climate Change Zartaj Gul and MNAs Maleeka Ali Bokhari and Kanwal Shauzab blamed the ‘liberal brigade’ to have made repeated attempts to devalue Prime Minister Imran Khan’s strong efforts towards projecting a positive and progressing image of the country.
