An arbitration award worth $1m has been offered to a former Black employee by the electric car manufacturing company, Tesla. The reward was given as a compensation, after the company failed to take strict actions against its employees spreading racism in the work place.

Melvin Berry, who was hired as a materials handler in 2015, became the target to extreme racism and over years of complaints by the Black employees including himself, the worker decided to quit after 18 months of workplace bullying. Not only this, but also the reports state that the electronic vehicle maker turned a blind eye towards the use of racial slurs and scrawling of swastikas and hateful symbols targeting the black community, on the assembly line. After the hatred within the work environment became mundane, employees started to quit eventually.

However, Tesla vehemently denied all the allegations regarding racism in a 2017 statement saying, the company “is absolutely against any form of discrimination, harassment, or unfair treatment of any kind.” Moreover, the company has not responded to a request for comment on Berry’s case as of yet.
