According to a new report from the media, neither of the two monthly subscription services available to PlayStation gamers can compete with Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass service’s collection of titles, but Sony aims to change that as soon as next year.

PlayStation Plus members have access to online multiplayer gaming as well as two monthly PS4 games to download, whilst PlayStation Now members have access to a restricted library of older titles to stream and download.

The Xbox Game Pass subscription, on the other hand, allows customers access to hundreds of games available on earlier Xbox platforms as well as new Microsoft games as soon as they’re released.

PS Now has a little over 3 million subscribers, while Xbox Game Pass has over 18 million, so it’s understandable that Sony would want to emulate Microsoft’s success.

The new PlayStation subscription service, code-named Spartacus, will allow members access to a portfolio of old games as well as more recently published titles for a monthly price, according to documents examined by Bloomberg and anonymous persons familiar with Sony’s plans.

According to the media, the service might launch as early as next spring, and it will support both the PS4 and the PS5, which is still hard to come by.

While the details aren’t completed, paperwork show Spartacus will have three levels of access. one would have the same features as PlayStation Plus, while the other will have “extended demos, game streaming, and a library of classic PS1, PS2, PS3 and PSP games.”
