Fiji blocks Russian-linked superyacht

Fiji’s government said Wednesday they’d blocked a superyacht reportedly owned by way of a sanctioned Russian oligarch from leaving the island nation’s waters.

The Pacific state’s prosecution workplace stated in a statement despatched to AFP that the High Court had granted an order on Tuesday to prevent the posh yacht Amadea from departing.

The yacht has been related in some reports to oligarch Suleiman Kerimov, who’s a target of US and European Union sanctions over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Fiji’s office of the director of public prosecutions said it acted under the authority of the attorney general after the country received a request for “mutual legal assistance” from the US government.

A separate US warrant seeking to seize the yacht would be “determined at a later date”, the prosecutors’ office said.

The next court hearing was due Thursday, it said.

Last week, Fijian police confirmed they were investigating the luxury yacht, which sailed from Latin America before allegedly arriving in Fiji without customs clearance.

The police commissioner said officers were probing whether there had been any customs or immigration breaches — as well as possible drugs, arms, or money laundering issues.

The Amadea is worth $325 million, consistent with the website superyachtfan.Com, which tracks luxurious vessels of the rich.

Various yacht-tracking sites list Kerimov because the proprietor, but this could no longer be independently confirmed.
