According to the World Spider Catalog, there are currently 50,000 distinct kinds of spiders roaming the Earth and there might be another 50,000 out there.
The Guriurius minuano, which belongs to the Salticidae family of jumping spiders and hunts its prey on shrubs and trees in southern Brazil, Uruguay, and around Buenos Aires, is the 50,000th spider registered, according to the WSC, which is based at the Natural History Museum of Bern in the Swiss capital.
It was named after the now-extinct Minuane people who inhabited in the region by arachnologist Kimberly S. Marta and her colleagues from Brazil.
While it took 265 years to reach 50,000 spiders, the rate of discovery is gradually growing, and it is estimated that it will take less than 100 years to achieve the same number again.
“We believe that there are still over 50,000 more spider species to find,” the WSC’s publishers added.
The spider catalogue may be found on the museum’s website for free.
“Spiders are the most significant predators in Earth’s terrestrial environments,” according to the museum. “Their ecological value should not be underestimated.”
“They are the most significant controllers of insect populations, consuming 400 to 800 million tonnes of insects every year, and hence are of essential value to humans.”
