The largest opposition political party in South Sudan has expressed dissatisfaction with recent selections to the unified military forces command structure.

According to the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO), a number of “severe abuses” occurred during the process of appointing commanders for different army, police, and security services units.

President Salva Kiir announced the selections last week.

According to the SPLM-IO, President Kiir excluded three opposition-designated directorates inside the National Police Service.

Additionally, it states that the president established new posts that were not agreed upon by the parties and appointed his loyalists to them.

“The president’s effort to divide the opposition… would make it more difficult for us to achieve necessary changes, particularly in the financial sector, across all organised forces,” Puok Both Baluang, an SPLM-IO official, stated in a news statement.

He asked President Kiir to adhere to the unified command arrangement. The president’s administration has made no comment on the situation.
