Burnley’s first game without Sean Dyche ended in a 1-1 draw at West Ham, on a day when the Clarets lost midfielder Ashley Westwood to a horrifying injury.

In the first half, Westwood’s leg buckled beneath him during a routine challenge with West Ham’s Nikola Vlasic, and he was stretchered off the field with oxygen.

Vlasic was also in tears as he realized the seriousness of the injury.

“He’s gone to hospital and we’re waiting for an update. We’re hoping he’s OK and our thoughts are with him,” said Burnley interim boss Mike Jackson.

“You could see it wasn’t good from the reaction of the players. He looked distraught.”

When the game resumed, Wout Weghorst scored a close range header off a corner to put Burnley in ahead.

The visitors, on the other hand, were made to rue a missed penalty by Maxwel Cornet just before halftime, as the Ivorian dragged his shot wide.

The Europa League is West Ham’s main priority for the rest of the season, with David Moyes’ side moving to the semi-finals with a 3-0 win over Lyon in midweek.
