In light of his wife’s announcement that she will be paying UK tax on her worldwide income, Rishi Sunak has admitted to having a US green card while serving as chancellor.

A spokesman for Mr. Sunak, who became chancellor in February 2020, verified the claim, saying he held a green card until about October.

It is a legal requirement for green card holders to declare that the United States will be their long-term residence and pay US taxes on all of their worldwide income.

Spokeswoman: “Rishi Sunak had a green card while he was living and working in the US.”

Having a green card does not imply that you are a legal resident of the United States.

“Permanent resident status in the United States is assumed to be automatically terminated after protracted absences from the United States.” One must also file US tax returns at the same time. Rishi Sunak adhered to all instructions and continued to file US tax returns as a non-resident, as required by law.

According to US law and as he had been advised, he proceeded to travel using his green card as necessary.” When he visited the United States for the first time as chancellor, he discussed the best course of action with American officials. He instantly returned his green card at this moment.

“During his time as a lawful permanent resident, he complied with all applicable laws and regulations and paid all needed taxes.”

A green card holder, according to the US Department of Homeland Security’s website, is a permanent resident who has been granted permission to live and work in the United States.
