Fans of “Squid Game” need not hold their breath: creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has yet to create the screenplay for season two, which he stated will most likely not be released until late 2024.

“I have to get back to work on season two. Hopefully, I’ll be able to expose it to the fans by the end of 2024 “The South Korean writer-director made the remarks during the MIPTV festival in Cannes, France, in the south of France.

He confesses to drafting only three pages of the script for the sequel to the violent mega-hit a day earlier at the neighbouring Canneseries festival.

In “Squid Game,” competitors from the margins of society compete in traditional South Korean children’s games for money, with the losers being executed.

Netflix said in October that 142 million customers – over two-thirds of its users – have seen the show, a record that necessitates a second season.

However, Hwang scripted the programme as a feature film in 2009 and was only persuaded to adapt it into a TV series once Netflix came in South Korea in 2016.

He said that rewriting the script over seven months was a chore.

“It was a living horror. Perhaps season two will be my final series “With a laugh, he remarked.

However, there were several advantages to success, including Hwang’s opportunity to meet his “hero,” Steven Spielberg, who informed him he had binged the entire programme in three days.

“He told me he wanted to steal my brain,” Hwang explained.

Hwang is also working on a film that sounds similar to his famous programme.

“KO Club” is a film about killing elderly people based on Umberto Eco’s book of the same name.

It was “even more savage than Squid Game,” according to Hwang.

“I’ll have to avoid older folks when it’s released,” he continued.
