The Pentagon stated Tuesday that the US government has approved a sale of up to $95 million in training and equipment to bolster Taiwan’s Patriot Air Defense System.

The Pentagon’s Defense Security Cooperation Agency stated in a statement that “the planned sale will assist to sustain the recipient’s (Taiwan’s) missile density and assure readiness for air operations.”

Taiwan will utilise the suggested training and equipment as a “deterrent to regional threats and to bolster homeland security,” according to the Defense Department.

This is the third military transaction approved by US President Joe Biden, after a similar permission in February for training and assistance for Taiwan’s missile defence systems.

Last August, Biden approved the sale of 40 155mm M109A6 medium self-propelled howitzer artillery systems to Taipei, which was his first significant arms transaction.

According to a database produced by AFP, China has significantly increased its sabre-rattling in recent years, flying 969 Chinese aeroplanes into Taiwan’s air defence zone in 2021, more than double the around 380 in 2020.

China considers Taiwan to be its territory and has often stated that it will reclaim it one day, using force if necessary.

Despite moving diplomatic recognition to Beijing in 1979, Washington has remained Taipei’s most significant friend and largest military provider.
