Despite charges that he murdered his wife, an Indiana township candidate has proceeded to the primary election.

Andrew Wilhoite, 40, of Lebanon, ran for township council on the Republican ticket. According to the Associated Press, he garnered 60 out of 276 votes on Tuesday, enabling him to run in the primary election.

The township board consists of three members. Wilhoite was one of three Republican candidates that ran. There were no Democrats on the ballot.

Wilhoite is on trial for the murder of his wife, Nikki Wilhoite.

Andrew allegedly bludgeoned Nikki during a fight, according to police reports. He allegedly then drove to a stream not far from their home and discarded her corpse.

Nikki Wilhoite’s corpse was discovered on March 26 after she filed for divorce on March 17. They had been married for 12 years.

The trial of Andrew Wilhoite is scheduled for August 29, and election day is November 8.

If Wilhoite is found guilty of a crime in the case before Election Day, he will be ineligible to run for office and will be withdrawn from the campaign.
