According to accounts, a rising star in gravel and mountain bike racing who had flown to Austin, Texas, for a race this week was shot and died in her friend’s home on Wednesday. Anna Moriah Wilson, 25, known as “Mo,” was discovered by a friend with several gunshot wounds in an East Austin residence soon before 10:00 p.m., according to Fox 7 Austin.

Officers and medical personnel attempted to save her life, but she was declared dead at the site.

Wilson, who recently began bicycling full-time after winning a series of events this year, flew to Texas from her Colorado home to compete in the Gravel Locos race on Saturday in Hico, roughly 120 miles north of Austin, according to cycling magazine VeloNews.

“Our hearts are devastated by Moriah Wilson’s terrible demise,” the Leadville Race Series said in a tribute on Twitter. “Her absence will leave an indelible void in our Leadville Family and in the sport of cycling as a whole. Our hearts go out to Mo’s family and friends as we grieve this tragic loss.”

On Wednesday, just before 10 p.m., the Austin Police Department was summoned to the East Austin house. Austin has seen 27 homicides this year, breaking the city’s homicide record of 89 last year.
