Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays Doctor Strange, will collaborate with Jason Bourne director Paul Greengrass on the upcoming historical thriller The Hood. He rose to prominence in 2004 as the director of The Bourne Supremacy, the second Jason Bourne film.
Greengrass, on the other hand, went on to direct films including The Bourne Ultimatum in 2007, Captain Phillips in 2013, and United 93 in 2006, for which he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Director.
Meanwhile, Cumberbatch was just nominated for an Academy Award for his starring role in The Power of the Dog. He’s also fresh off his appearance as the Sorceror Supreme in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which is now in theatres in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
According to Deadline, Cumberbatch has found his next film in Paul Greengrass’ historical drama The Hood, which he wrote and directed. It will be the director’s first picture since News of the World, which was released in 2020. The Hood will be produced and financed by Cross Creek Pictures (Black Swan, Hacksaw Ridge). A release date and more cast members have yet to be announced.
The Hood, interestingly, is said to be about a peasant revolt in England, and it will follow a farmer (Cumberbatch) who becomes the rebellion’s commander. According to early reviews, the film is an action drama in the spirit of Braveheart and Gladiator. Greengrass, whose signature use of the handheld camera is on full display in the Bourne films, might employ similar techniques to bring The Hood to life in what looks to be a once-in-a-generation partnership with Cumberbatch.
