An emergency management official reported on Sunday that the number of persons killed in a building collapse in Nigeria’s commercial capital, Lagos, had grown to four.

According to Ibrahim Farinloye, coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency in the southwest region, five persons have been rescued since the building collapsed on a street in the Lagos Island section of the state on Saturday.

Building collapses are widespread in Nigeria, according to local experts, who attribute them to old structures, non-compliance with building planning and laws, and the use of poor materials during construction.
