EU condemns fatal attack in Somalia on Burundi soldiers

The EU on Wednesday slammed a lethal Al-Shabaab jihadist attack on Burundi peacekeepers in Somalia and expressed help for the Africa Union (AU) task inside the united states of America.

The European Union “strongly condemns the attack” completed Tuesday on an AU base in primary Somalia and voiced its condolences to the families of these centred, in line with a statement by the bloc’s overseas policy carrier.

Ten Burundian soldiers were killed and another 25 wounded in the attack, with another five missings, Burundi’s army said.

The EU said several Somali citizens were also killed or wounded.

The EU in its statement expressed “its deep appreciation to ATMIS’s (the AU Transition Mission in Somalia) troop and police-contributing countries for their continued support in the fight against terror”.

ATMIS is made of troops from Burundi, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda. It is tasked with helping stabilise the safety scenario in Somalia, a bothered Horn of Africa country that is also grappling with a political disaster and an extended drought threatening famine.

The general ATMIS force numbers 20,000, counting infantrymen, police and civilians, even though that is scheduled to be decreased to 0 with the aid of the quit of 2024.
