Following the deadly shooting at a grocery store in Buffalo over the weekend, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul launched a strategy to “fight domestic terrorism” and probe violent extremism online.

“NEW: We’re putting out a comprehensive strategy to combat domestic terrorism, reform state gun regulations, and look into social media sites that promote violent extremism. Following the racial terror attack in Buffalo, New York will lead the effort to face this pandemic front on “Hochul took to Twitter Wednesday afternoon.

According to the New York Post, Hochul established a new section overseen by State Police to follow violent extremism online and investigate social media firms that enable hate speech to be uploaded on their platforms.

The statement on Wednesday included an executive order ordering the State Police to take guns from persons found to pose a threat to themselves or others under the state’s “red flag statute.”

Ten individuals were killed and three others were injured in a shooting at a Buffalo grocery store by a self-described white nationalist.

Payton Gendron, 18, of Conklin, New York, was identified as the shooter. During a news conference on Saturday, officials stated that evidence shows the shooting was racially motivated, citing a nearly 180-page manifesto written by the shooter describing the attack.

“Our is the ugliest manifestation of white supremacy in this country,” Hochul said of the shooting on Wednesday. “It’s spreading our culture, infecting our nation, and it’s now taking away members of our family.”
