The Australian state of New South Wales (NSW) said on Wednesday that the first trial of a hydrogen-powered electric bus will begin later this year, as part of the state’s shift to zero-emission technology.

To test the future fuel source, the government is collaborating with local and national industry sources. Bus operators are also participating in the study to better understand how the technology may be extended throughout regional NSW.

“Unlocking hydrogen utilisation in the heavy transport industry is critical to establishing new sectors and attaining economic success,” said NSW Treasurer and Minister for Energy Matt Kean.

The technology will be tested locally once the first hydrogen fuel cell electric bus arrives on the Central Coast in east New South Wales.

Before it can be used in the experiment, the bus must also pass on-road testing.

According to NSW Minister for Remote Transport and Roads Sam Farraway, buses in certain regional regions must drive longer distances before refuelling, which is why experiments like these are crucial.

“Hydrogen buses have a larger range than battery electric buses, which may make them more suitable for usage in the state’s regional and outside metropolitan districts,” Farraway explained.

“The findings of the Central Coast battery electric bus trial will be compared to the hydrogen bus to determine any important differences, including fuel efficiency and refilling times.”

The pilot is part of the state government’s effort to meet zero-emission targets with alternative transportation choices that are entirely conceived, constructed, and supported in Australia.
