The 62-year-old man arrested last month for allegedly shooting ten people on the New York subway pleaded not guilty to federal terrorism charges on Friday.

Frank James was apprehended a day after the April 12 attack, which occurred as a crowded subway train approached a Brooklyn station.

James is accused of detonating two smoke canisters on the train as it approached the station before opening fire on the crowd.

Ten people were wounded while another 20 were injured in the ensuing panic.

James fled the scene, triggering a day-long manhunt until he was detained by officers on a Manhattan street.

The federal terrorism charges carry a potential sentence of life in prison. He also faces state charges in connection with the attack.

Prior to the attack, James had posted several videos on YouTube in which he delivered lengthy political tirades while criticising New York’s mayor.

His next court date is set for July 25.
