The third polio case of the year in Pakistan has been reported from North Waziristan, Bol News reported on Sunday.

Pakistan had reported its first poliovirus case of the year in North Waziristan on April 23 after a break of 15 months. It is also notable that all three cases of the crippling disease in the ongoing year have surfaced from North Waziristan.

According to the sources in the National Institute of Health (NIH), an infant aged one year is found to be infected with the poliovirus. The location of the detection is Miranshah.

NIH sources said the specimen of the infected child was taken on May 7 and the test reports have returned positive.

According to the reports, the infected child was not administered the anti-polio vaccine during the immunisation drive.

In this regard, Federal Health Minister Abdul Qadir Patel said that the non-eradication of polio is a great tragedy as a nation. He added that even a single case is a great loss, emphasising that all children must be vaccinated against the disease.

Federal Health Secretary said that they feared detection of more cases after detection of the first case of the virus this year.

He added that since January, they have been taking measures in the southern districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) to eradicate the virus.

The official said that six districts of the KP have been declared sensitive under the polio-eradication programme.

As of today, Pakistan and Afghanistan remain the only two countries in the world that have failed to stop the transmission of the crippling disease.
