Marvel filmmakers Joe and Anthony Russo expressed their displeasure with Disney’s handling of Scarlett Johansson during their lawsuit in a recent interview with Den of Greek, as reported by ET Canada. The Avengers actress has been guaranteed that her solo Marvel picture Black Widow will be released in theatres, and that this will be her salary for the film.

Due to the pandemic, Disney initially offered the actress such a deal, but the studio decided to release the film in theatres and on their OTT platform on the same day, which had a significant impact on ticket sales and, ultimately, Johansson’s salary. As a result, the actress went to court to fight for her rights, albeit the dispute was eventually handled outside of court. The Russo brothers chastised Disney for its handling of artists, citing Johansson’s feud with the studio as an example.

“We’re absolutely worried with the trend in the market that is shifting away from artists,” Joe said during the conversation. He went on to explain how the larger firms who are now developing their own platforms have “greater pockets,” allowing them to pay performers more for their services.

He continued,  “So the studios are having a conservative reaction, and they’re trying to downplay their need for stars. They’re trying to force IP to be their star, and in accordance with that they’re also then trying to underpay and diminish the need for stars on their projects.”

Joe’s thoughts on Scarlett Johansson are as follows: “That was really not an appropriate way for them to handle that situation. It was disturbing to us as artists. Scarlett is a good friend of ours, and we were disheartened by how it was handled. We’re glad it’s resolved.”
