Senators hope to enact a bill expanding protection for Supreme Court justices’ families

Following protests at the residences of some Supreme Court justices over the weekend, lawmakers of the US Senate are attempting to approve a bipartisan measure that would extend security protection to their family members.
The congressional campaign comes just one week after Politico published a bombshell leaked draft of an opinion indicating that the Supreme Court might overturn Roe v. Wade as soon as next month.
Senators John Cornyn, a Republican from Texas, and Chris Coons, a Democrat from Delaware, have sponsored the Supreme Court Police Parity Act, which they hope to adopt as soon as feasible.
In a news statement, Cornyn stated, “The events of the last week have increased the emphasis on Supreme Court Justices’ families, who are tragically facing threats to their safety in today’s more heated political atmosphere.” “By expanding Supreme Court police security to family members, we can ensure that Justices and their families are safeguarded from those who intend to harm them.”
In the press release, Coons stated: “Families of Supreme Court Justices deserve the same degree of security as the highest-ranking officials in our country because they have the same profile and exposure. Threats against Supreme Court Justices from extremists on all sides of the political spectrum must be taken seriously, which makes this law a sad necessity.”
Pro-abortion rights demonstrators gathered outside the residences of Justice Brett Kavanaugh and Chief Justice John Roberts in Chevy Chase, Maryland, just outside of Washington, DC, over the weekend.
While most protests have been peaceful, law enforcement authorities in the nation’s capital have been preparing for possible security threats. Last week, contractors constructed an 8-foot-tall non-scalable fence around portions of the Supreme Bench building, as well as concrete Jersey barriers in front of the court.
