According to Politico on Monday, a leaked early draft majority opinion implies that the US Supreme Court is likely to reverse the landmark Roe v Wade decision, which legalized abortion statewide.

“Roe was egregiously incorrect from the outset,” Justice Samuel Alito’s draft opinion argues.

It means he, along with Justices Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett, voted to overturn Roe v Wade and preserve a Mississippi statute that makes terminating a fetus beyond 15 weeks illegal.

“Abortion raises a serious moral issue. The inhabitants of each state have the right to regulate or ban abortion under the Constitution “According to the leaked memo, Justice Alito stated.

The case, also known as Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health Organisation, is anticipated to be decided before the term closes in late June or early July.

The immediate effect of such a decision would be to make abortion illegal across a large portion of the United States, forcing women to carry unwanted pregnancies to term unless they can travel to a state where abortion is legal under state law, or risk undergoing an illegal procedure outside of licensed medical facilities.
