Former President Donald Trump was granted an out after New York Supreme Court Judge Arthur Engoron ruled him in contempt of court and fined him $10,000 per day unless he responded to the New York Attorney General’s request for papers. Attorney General Letitia James has requested numerous financial data after former Trump attorney Michael Cohen testified before Congress that Trump overstated the valuations of several assets on statements in order to obtain better loan and tax arrangements.

Engoron said on Wednesday that if Trump provides sworn affidavits documenting his attempts to locate the sought data and clarifying his and the Trump Organization’s document preservation procedures by May 20, he will conditionally lift Trump’s contempt finding. Trump’s Alina Habba stated in a court filing on May 6 that the replies to James’ demand were complete and correct, with no significant papers or information concealed.

In that filing, Habba stated that she investigated Trump’s offices and private quarters at his Bedminster, New Jersey, golf club, as well as his apartment at his Mar-a-Lago, Florida, club, and found no papers related to the subpoena that Trump had not already given up. She also conducted extensive searches in other areas, including file cabinets at the Trump Organization’s New York headquarters. Trump stated in a separate signed affidavit attached with Habba’s submission that all records responsive to the attorney general’s demand had been given over.
