UN envoy discusses challenges in Syria

On Sunday, UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen said he spoke with Syrians about “the extremely profound social, economic, and humanitarian issues” they face.

Pedersen informed reporters following his meeting with Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad that the Syrian Constitutional Committee meeting scheduled for May 28 in Geneva was also discussed during the visit.

As part of the UN-facilitated committee’s mission to propose an update or rewrite Syria’s constitution, 50 representatives of civil society, 50 members of the government, and 50 members of the opposition will assemble in Geneva for a new round of discussions.
