The Chicago Police Department (CPD) introduced a new foot-pursuit policy on Tuesday that prohibits police from pursuing people in certain situations.

According to the new policy, cops, however, no longer be authorized to pursue persons who flee during a conflict.

CPD Superintendent David Brown expressed his hope that the new policy will increase police safety and accountability.

Foot-pursuit regulations “keep cops safe” by limiting “physicality” between officers and criminals, particularly armed criminals.

The superintendent noted in a statement that “the safety of our community members and officers remains at the foundation of this new foot pursuit policy.
