DC Democratic Mayoral candidates for mayor gave a variety of explanations for rising carjackings in the nation’s capital. It includes a shortage of after-school services, mental health issues, and the aftermath of the coronavirus outbreak.

Running for re-election in November, Mayor Muriel Bowser, christened a downtown D.C. street “Black Lives Matter” plaza at the height of June 2020. Unrest following George Floyd’s death when former President Trump was still in the White House did not mention the defund police movement in her response to a question seeking the “root cause.”

Bowser did, however, agree that the government cannot do everything when it comes to parenting children.

“I’m going to say something different than my colleagues here because if someone tells you that the government can accomplish everything, they are horribly incorrect,” Bowser added.

“The fact is that we must prioritize our youth,” she remarked. They’re returning to school, finding it difficult to adjust.  Not only are they having issues in school, but they’re also causing severe problems in the community.

“60 percent of Black and Brown pupils are behind grade level, and that is one of the factors,” he stated. One of the main reasons is that we are not treating these young people’s mental health and trauma. We keep pointing at them, saying, “Young people, you have failed us.”
