Ketanji Brown Jackson sat quite close to New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern during her graduating speech at Harvard University. In her speech, Ardern highlights her government’s recent accomplishments, ranging from the legalization of gay marriage to climate change promises.

She then specifically mentions one: “Banning military-style semi-automatics and assault guns.” As she says this, Ketanji Brown begins cheering.

In a speech on Thursday night, President Biden stated, “We need to prohibit assault weapons and large-capacity magazines.” He has also advocated for increasing the purchasing age for weapons, more background checks, and red-flag regulations. Meanwhile, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has called for hearings on an assault weapons prohibition.

However, some states already have assault weapon prohibitions in place, while others are considering them in the aftermath of the massacres.

Critics have claimed that the restrictions are not only ineffectual but also violate the rights of law-abiding gun owners.
