Officers slain in line of duty remembered by the Mississippi mourners

A police officer killed in the line of duty in Mississippi earlier this month. He was remembered there and in his Alabama hometown as someone who was willing to serve any community where he worked.

Meridian, Mississippi, held a memorial service for Meridian Police Officer Kennis Croom. He killed while responding to a domestic violence call on June 9. He was supposed to have the day off.

Croom’s funeral however, held on Saturday in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where he grew up. Mourners packed the gym at Shelton State Community College.

Croom killed while responding to a call about the death of a woman, Brittany Jones. Dante Marquez Bender, a former Newton police officer recently arrested on June 10 in Ackerman.

Sgt. Tavaras Smith of the Meridian Police Department said officers “worked nonstop” until they found and arrested Bender.

“It was an honor to assist officer Croom in making his final arrest,” Smith said.

Croom worked as a law enforcement officer in Tuscaloosa and Mississippi before coming to Meridian. According to the Meridian Star. He worked for sheriff’s departments in Hinds and Lauderdale counties.

Croom treated each community he worked in as if it were his own. “No matter where he landed, he was always concerned about the citizens.”

Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill, a former member of the state House of Representatives, expressed gratitude to the Croom family for their community leadership.

“It didn’t surprise me that Kennis’ tragic incident happened on his day off,” Merrill said. “Who else but a Croom would work on his day off to help someone?”
