The number of bombs in Afghanistan has decreased since the Taliban took over from a US-backed administration last year, but Daesh has continued to assault minority groups.

During the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which ended on April 30, a series of bombs struck the country, some of which were claimed by Daesh.

A bombing at a mosque in Imam Shahib area on April 22 killed at least 36 worshippers and injured dozens more in one of the bloodiest strikes since the Taliban retook power.

After Friday prayers, members of the minority Sufi community were practising rites when the bomb went off.

Daesh’s regional branch in Afghanistan has repeatedly targeted Shias and other minorities, such as Sufis, whom it considers heretics.

Officials from the Taliban claim to have beaten Deash, but observers say the group remains a major security threat to Afghanistan’s present leadership.
