THATTA: The water supply to Karachi has been suspended after the 72-inch diameter pipeline at the Dhabeji pumping station burst on Monday morning.

The Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) said the Line No. 5 was ruptured after a power breakdown at the pumping station.

The water supply to several areas of Karachi including Shah Faisal Town, Gulshan-e-Hadeed, Malir, Landhi, Quaidabad, Gulshan-e-Iqbal has been suspended after the incident.

A KWSB spokesperson said the power breakdown ruptured the main supply line, which has led to the suspension of water supply to the city. He said the pipeline could be restored within 24-36 hours.

The water from the burst pipeline has inundated nearby village. Around three pumps have been closed at the pumping station. The repair work will only be started after the water has been drained out.

This is the second time a major water supply line to Karachi has burst. It has been reported that the line has been repaired several times. The pumping station supplies 28 million gallons water to Karachi every day which has now been suspended and millions of gallons water has been wasted.

The concerned officials of the KWSB have blamed the matter on the negligence of K-Electric for the power breakdown. It must be noted that KWSB is exempted from load shedding. In case of announced load shedding, the breakdown can be easily managed.

The main sources of water for Karachi are Keenjhar Lake and Hub dam from which water is pumped through three main bulk pumping stations located at Dhabeji, Gharo, and Hub.
