A top health official believes the epidemic of monkeypox in the US must be taken more seriously.

“This is important. We don’t know how big and harmful it could be, but we must assume it will spread.” Dr. Fauci told on Saturday.

FDA director Dr. Scott Gottlieb said it may be too late to stop the infection. “There’s not much time left to stop this.”

Gottlieb said on “Face the Nation” on Sunday that if it hasn’t closed yet, it’s closing.

Monkeypox however identified in most of the US, except in a few states, according to the CDC (CDC). Most cases are in New York, California, Illinois, and Florida.

Fauci, who oversees the NIAID and is Biden’s top medical adviser, said the statistics are “very likely an undercount.”

“Whenever something like this comes up, it’s probably the tip of the iceberg,” Fauci added. “We must test more extensively.”

“We’re probably only discovering a tiny number of genuine instances because we have a restrictive definition of who got tested. Most of the time, we’re looking at males who have sex with other men and at STD clinics.

We’re looking there and discovering cases, but there are other cases elsewhere. Because we’re not looking, we miss them.”

Friday, the CDC reported 8 cases of monkeypox among female-born individuals. Children and teens however not affected.

“It’s a community staple. This virus won’t erupt because it’s difficult to propagate, but it’ll likely stick around. You must treat this as normal. It could spread as an STD, but also elsewhere “saying.
