Shah Rukh Khan wanted to do comedy film after playing negative role in Baazigar
Bollywood has received some of the most significant films from directors Abbas...
Shah Rukh Khan tossed Shilpa off the balcony
In an exclusive interview with Pinkvilla, the directors talked candidly about their experience in Bollywood and in-depth on how Shah Rukh Khan’s part in Baazigar turned him into an overnight superstar with those who saw the movie in theatres.
The most recent presentation, Cult Creators, which honours the contribution of Indian filmmakers to the Indian Film Industry, included Abbas and Mustan Burmawalla. The pair explained how Shah Rukh Khan joined their project Baazigar after Anil Kapoor initially declined it since he couldn’t portray an anti-hero considering the films he was making at the time. They disclosed that Shah Rukh Khan’s name was suggested to them for the movie by an actor named Amrit Patel, who had previously worked with Shah Rukh Khan in the film Fauji, and who also assured them that he would work enthusiastically and do his part properly. Producer Ratan Jain phoned him and demonstrated his enthusiasm as well.
The Khiladi directors discussed how Shah Rukh Khan insisted on an Abbas-Mustan narration so that he could understand their goals for the film. Even after the pair complained that their narration would not be as compelling and effective, he insisted on providing one. They went on, “After hearing, he immediately responded “yes.” “I’m doing the film,” he declared. SRK was knowledgeable despite the poor narration we provided. He was aware of our expectations for the movie.”
Abbas Mustan recalls seeing the movie on its opening day in theatres to observe how the audience responded. Particularly when SRK’s character hurled Shilpa Shetty’s character from the balcony, they received a response they never anticipated. Because they were completely unprepared for it, the audience cried loudly. They stated: “The audience yelled when Shah Rukh flung her off the balcony. People began cheering and whistling as he left the crime site. This kind of response was not what we anticipated. This dude is a superstar, was the response. Shah Rukh Khan enjoyed tremendous support from the audience.” Shah Rukh Khan’s career took off after Baazigar, and subsequent films like Darr, Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa, Karan Arjun, and Dilwale Dulhania helped to solidify his status as a classic hero.
The last movie on which Abbas-Mustan collaborated was Machine, a Kiara Advani and Mustafa Burmawalla production. Unfortunately, the movie bombed both critically and financially. They are currently working on an unnamed movie with an ensemble cast, including Bobby Deol and Arjun Rampal as its stars. Shah Rukh Khan will appear in three movies next year, including Pathaan, Jawan, and Dunki. He was last seen in a major role in Zero.
