The aspirants have till Monday at 14:00 BST to get 100 supporters. The competition will be limited to two contenders if any candidate receives 156 nominations out of the 357 Tory MPs, as there won’t be enough MPs left to support a third candidate.

The Conservative Party membership will then vote on it online; the results will be made public on Friday.

However, if the party’s MPs support just one candidate, a new prime minister may be in office by Monday afternoon.
