Residents of Kherson, a region of southern Ukraine controlled by Russia, have been ordered to “immediately leave the city” and move to the Dnipro River’s eastern bank.

In the midst of strong international criticism, Russia annexed Kherson, a gateway to Crimea, along with three other Ukrainian areas last month. Kherson is situated at the mouth of the Dnipro River, which empties into the Black Sea.

On Saturday, the Russian-backed authorities instructed city residents to cross to the river’s eastern bank.

“Due to the tense situation at the front, the increased danger of massive shelling of the city and the threat of terrorist attacks, all civilians must immediately leave the city,” a message to residents posted on Telegram reads. “Take care of the safety of your family and friends! Do not forget documents, money, valuables and clothes.”
