Following the release of Avatar: The Way of Water, James Cameron became the first director in history to have three films gross more than USD$1.51 billion at the box office.

Cameron set the record by keeping two of his notable films, Titanic (1997) and Avatar (2009), at the top of the global box office.

Cameron’s 2009 blockbuster Avatar holds the record for the highest-grossing film in history, grossing $2,922.9 million.

Titanic, which is still in the top three, grossed $2,201.6 million at the box office more than 25 years after its initial release.

Meanwhile, according to Deadline, Avatar: The Way of Water has surpassed Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick as the highest-grossing film in 2022, earning nearly $1.547 billion in 23 days.

Cameron’s expectations for the Avatar sequel are rising as the studio hopes to surpass the $2 billion mark.
