Zomato Halts Non-Veg Deliveries in North India
Zomato has temporarily halted the delivery of non-vegetarian items in several states across North India.
The decision, which has sparked conversations on social media platforms, is believed to be connected to the upcoming consecration ceremony of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, a momentous cultural and religious event.
Users from various cities noticed the absence of non-veg food options on the platform, leading to speculations about the cause behind this sudden change. Zomato, responding to user concerns on social media (formerly known as Twitter), clarified that the suspension was a result of complying with the government’s notice.
“We have disabled the delivery of non-veg items in Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan as per govt. notice. Hope this clarification helps,” stated Zomato’s customer care support.
The move coincides with the closure of meat shops in the affected states, following an order from Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary Durga Shankar Mishra. District magistrates were instructed to ensure the shutdown of liquor vends and meat shops in preparation for the consecration ceremony. Additionally, the Assam government has declared January 22 as a ‘Dry Day’ to uphold the religious sanctity of the event, emphasizing the significance and solemnity attached to the Ram Mandir consecration.
Zomato’s decision to temporarily suspend non-veg deliveries reflects the platform’s commitment to adhering to government directives during events of cultural and religious importance, ensuring sensitivity to the sentiments of the affected regions.
