GameCentral’s latest selection of the best new gaming apps for Android and iPhone features an exceptionally challenging potato game and one of the top puzzle games of the year.

This month’s mobile game releases offer a range of experiences, from the frenzied fun of Super Monsters Ate My Condo+ to the tranquil and quirky storytelling of Strange Horticulture, as well as the strategic roguelite gameplay of Loop Hero.

Shift 2

In Shift 2’s match-four puzzles, players work on a 4×4 grid, where they can drag any row or column to create matching lines and upgrade specific tiles.

Additionally, combining four matching squares creates a new single square, adding depth to the gameplay, much like Scenic Route’s earlier game Generations, which offers more complexity than initially apparent.

Building each matching line increases the player’s multiplier, which resets when a move fails to result in a match. Furthermore, the game’s three play modes significantly change the gameplay experience.

In Calm mode, gameplay is turn-based, while in Frantic mode, it is timed. Tactical mode ends abruptly if the player makes a move that doesn’t trigger at least one match, adding a challenging twist to navigating through the stages of this intricately designed and mentally challenging puzzle game.

Vroomies

Vroomies is a straightforward top-down racing game where players swipe to navigate corners and tap to accelerate. Skillful timing earns players control points, enhancing their speed and enabling them to take advantage of shortcuts.

Furthermore, by competing against computer-controlled opponents, players can obtain temporary power-ups that last for the duration of the championship they’ve entered. Players must also manage their tire wear, strategically pitting in for replacements when necessary.

Players must unlock additional vehicles as they progress through the game’s competitions, all of which are available for free download and have no microtransactions.

Super Monsters Ate My Condo+

Monsters stand on either side of a precarious tower of apartments, requiring players to flick levels into their mouths to stack three adjacent floors of the same color. This stacking creates an upgraded condominium instantly.

Feeding upgraded floors to your monsters unleashes their unique superpowers in a fast-paced, intense, and incredibly entertaining game filled with action.

This version, originally launched in 2012, has somewhat improved visuals but otherwise looks to be comparable to its older forebear. There is a paid version for Android.

Loop Hero

Loop Hero is a unique blend of roguelite, idle game, and role-playing elements. Players control a small dungeoneer who navigates a dynamically generated, looping hallway, automatically battling creatures along the way.

Furthermore, defeating encounters rewards players with loot such as new weapons, armor, and equipment. Players also collect cards that expand the geography around the loop by adding enemies, power-ups, and treasure chests, gradually increasing the loop’s difficulty as players progress and level up.

In this highly addictive and user-friendly game, players must decide whether to retreat to base camp with their acquired riches, adding an element of risk-taking to the gameplay.

Lost Potato

On one screen, the player’s potato character cannot directly attack enemies but must instead utilize spikes or missiles to defeat them by smashing them into these hazards.
