Journalist community meets Governor Punjab

LAHORE: The representatives of journalist community under the banner of Joint Action Committee (JAC) met with Governor Punjab Sardar Saleem Haider.

In the meeting, the representatives of journalistic organizations informed the Governor of Punjab about their concerns on the Punjab Defamation Bill and said that the Defamation Bill is an attempt to stifle the freedom of expression.

On this occasion, Governor Punjab Saleem Haider said that all the stakeholders will be taken into confidence on the controversial clauses. Governor assured journalists that he will not sign bill and added that bill should have been consulted earlier.

Governor Punjab said that the Pakistan People’s Party does not support the current bill and party will stands with the journalists.

Earlier,  Joint Action Committee (JAC) of media stakeholders strongly rejected the passage of the controversial Defamation Bill 2024 by the Punjab Assembly and announced the approaching court against this ‘black law’.

A virtual emergent meeting of the Joint Action Committee, which consists of the Pakistan Broadcasters Association (PBA), All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS), Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE), Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ), and Association of Electronic Media Editors and News Directors (AEMEND), issued a joint statement on Thursday
