The electric bus service is scheduled for official inauguration on July 5, with either Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif or Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi anticipated to grace the ceremony. This event signifies a notable achievement in Islamabad’s endeavor to upgrade its public transportation infrastructure.
The electric buses will initially operate on two routes:
These 30 buses are just the start of a larger fleet of 200 electric buses set to be introduced gradually. Among them, 70 buses will come from Karachi and 60 from China. The Capital Development Authority (CDA) intends to run these buses on 11 diverse routes, linking rural and urban areas across Islamabad.
The electric buses belong to the National Radio and Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC), which is a subsidiary of the Ministry of Defense. The Capital Development Authority (CDA) will pay a fare ranging from 306 to 331 rupees per kilometer and will offer logistical support to the contractor as needed.
To facilitate the new electric bus service, the CDA has set up a charging station with six points at the Convention Center. Another facility is under construction at the H-9 Metro Depot, specifically for the 70 buses coming from Karachi. Additionally, bus depots are being built at Zero Point, I-9, and Tramari to ensure efficient operations and maintenance of the fleet.
The introduction of the electric bus service in Islamabad marks a major advancement in upgrading the city’s public transportation system. Plans for future expansion and infrastructure development aim to provide a sustainable, efficient, and convenient transportation option for residents.
