The Punjab cabinet, under the leadership of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, has sanctioned the installation of solar systems for approximately 4.5 million consumers using up to 500 units of electricity. This decision, made during the 11th cabinet meeting, aims to alleviate public concerns over rising electricity bills and promote sustainable energy solutions across the province.
“We are introducing solar systems for 4.5 million consumers who utilize up to 500 units of electricity,” stated Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. “With the recent surge in electricity costs, there has been growing anxiety among the public. Together with my team, we have devised a solution.”
In addition to this pivotal decision, the cabinet addressed several other significant matters. They approved a standardized version of the Holy Quran and entrusted the University of Health Sciences with conducting the MD CAT 2024 examination. Furthermore, new procedures were established for appointing divisional directors of education and college principals, and the cabinet discontinued the two-year Pharmacy Assistant Course.
To safeguard environmental interests, amendments were made to the Boilers and Pressure Vessels Ordinance 2002, prohibiting the use of substandard oil. Changes were also introduced to the Punjab Mining Concession Rules 2002, alongside the establishment of a Monitoring and Evaluation Directorate within the Department of Law and Parliamentary Affairs.
Among other developments, the cabinet signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the World Food Program, revised the Punjab Police Service Rules, and expanded the jurisdiction of the Walled City of Lahore Authority to encompass the entire Punjab. They also accepted the resignation of the President of the Punjab Provincial Cooperative Bank Limited and appointed interim and permanent replacements.
Additionally, the cabinet approved a 15 million euro grant from KFW Development Bank for the “Green Energy Project,” aimed at promoting renewable energy initiatives such as solarizing schools and hospitals across Punjab.
