NADRA, Sindh Govt establish diagnostic desk of Thalassemia, Hepatitis
KARACHI: National Database & Registration Authority (NADRA) Sindh, in collaboration with the provincial government, has established diagnostic Desk of Thalassemia Prevention and Hepatitis at two centers in the city.
An inauguration ceremony was held at NADRA Center Korangi No. 4 near the zoo, in honor of the Thalassemia test desk.
While speaking to the media, DG NADRA Sindh stated that in the first phase, Thalassemia desks are being set up at Korangi and Big NRC in Safoora, and the scope will be expanded to other centers as needed. He mentioned that through these desks at NADRA centers, free testing for Thalassemia and other blood diseases, including Hepatitis A, B, and C, will be possible with the support of the Sindh government and Muhammadi Blood Bank.
During his address at the event, DG NADRA Sindh emphasized that this initiative by the Sindh government will undoubtedly be a game changer, as diseases like Thalassemia and other blood disorders are silent killers with severe and painful effects on humanity.
He further added that nearly 500,000 people visit NADRA centers across Karachi and Sindh for the renewal of national identity cards and other matters. If we can convince the individuals visiting NADRA centers to get tested for Thalassemia, it would be a significant achievement.
On this occasion, Secretary Blood Transfusion Dr. Dur e naz Jamal stated that they are encouraging families with major Thalassemia cases because it is established that if one case is reported in these families, more cases are likely to be found. There is a need to raise public awareness and encourage blood sample testing to reduce the incidence of major cases after identifying minor Thalassemia cases.
She noted that 5 out of 100 people could be affected by minor Thalassemia, which is why this test is crucial for unmarried individuals.
In this regard, a ceremony will soon be held with scholars from various schools of thought and key figures from other sectors of society to highlight the Thalassemia awareness campaign more effectively.
