PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has recorded its first locally transmitted case of Monkeypox (Mpox), the province’s chief minister’s health adviser, Ihtisham Ali.
According to Adviser to Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for Health Ihtisham Khan, the transfer of Monkeypox locally in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is the first time, the victim’s husband recently returned from a Gulf country.
The infection was detected in a woman who was admitted to hospital on February 18 after experiencing fever and body aches.
Ihtisham Khan said the patient was taken to the hospital on February 18 on complaints of body pain and fever.
Advisor Health says that all close people, including the patient’s husband, have been instructed to have domestic isolation.
A team from the Public Health Section collected samples and sent them to the Public Health Reference Laboratory at Khyber Medical University in Peshawar, where the deadly disease was confirmed on February 21.
This case marks a departure from previous infections in the province, which were linked solely to international travel.
Earleir, Pakistan has reported its third polio case of 2025, as verified by the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication.
The latest case was detected in Sindh’s Larkana district, according to lab confirmation. The first case of the year was previously reported in Dera Ismail Khan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
