PM writes letter to Omar Ayub for appointment of new CEC

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has started the consultation process for the appointment of a new Chief Election Commissioner and two Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) members.

In this regard, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has formally written a letter to Leader of the Opposition Omar Ayub Khan.

Omar Ayub confirmed receipt of the letter, stating that the Prime Minister had sent the correspondence on May 16 regarding appointments to the Election Commission.

He added that he would soon write to the Speaker of the National Assembly regarding the formation of the parliamentary committee.

The consultation process has been initiated following the directive of the Islamabad High Court. The constitutional term of the Chief Election Commissioner and members from Sindh and Balochistan has already ended.

Under the 26th Constitutional Amendment, the current Election Commission will continue to function until new appointments are made.

It is worth noting that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has already approached the Islamabad High Court concerning the ECP appointments.
