SBCA releases data on dangerous buildings following Lyari incident

KARACHI: In the aftermath of the five-storey building collapse in Lyari’s Baghdadi area, the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) has released updated figures on dilapidated structures across the city.

The SBCA has revealed that a total of 578 dangerous buildings exist across Karachi. According to SBCA, District South tops the list with 456 hazardous and uninhabitable structures. District Central ranks second with 66 such buildings, while Kemari comes third with 23.

In Korangi and East districts, the number of dangerous buildings stands at 14 and 13 respectively, followed by 4 in Malir. The lowest count is in District West, with only 2 unsafe buildings reported.

The SBCA has not yet taken steps to evacuate the troubled buildings, the authority has installed banners on the buildings every year before the monsoon season.

On the other hand, SBCA technical committee and demolition team have arrived at the site of the collapsed building in Karachi’s Baghdadi area.

According to the SBCA Director General, the building was around 50 years old. He stated that the technical committee will investigate and determine the exact cause of the collapse.

Notably, the building was not listed among the officially declared dangerous structures in the city.
