KARACHI: The Sindh Health Department has announced a vaccination campaign to protect young girls from cervical cancer.

Provincial Health Minister Dr. Azra Fazal Pechuho said the initiative aims to safeguard girls against cervical cancer through the administration of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine.

According to the minister, the vaccination campaign will run from September 15 to September 27, during which eligible girls will be immunized.

She emphasized that timely vaccination can effectively prevent cervical cancer and ensure long-term health protection.

The cervix is the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. When abnormal cells begin to grow uncontrollably on the cervix, the condition is known as cervical cancer. It develops gradually and can become life-threatening if not diagnosed and treated in time.

Cause of Cervical Cancer

The primary cause of cervical cancer is the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), a common virus usually transmitted through sexual contact. While most HPV infections resolve on their own, some high-risk types—particularly HPV-16 and HPV-18—can persist and lead to cervical cancer.
