The release of Lazawaal Ishq—billed as Pakistan’s first dating show—has ignited a storm of debate across social media platforms. With clips from the program going viral, a fierce cultural and moral backlash has emerged, particularly from conservative segments of society.

Hosted by acclaimed actress Ayesha Omar, the show has quickly become a flashpoint in ongoing conversations about tradition, media freedom, and evolving societal norms.

Within days of its launch, Lazawaal Ishq found itself in the crosshairs of public opinion. Critics argue that the show promotes values misaligned with Pakistan’s religious and cultural identity. Hashtags demanding a ban on the show have trended across platforms, with detractors accusing it of promoting “Western ideas” that are “inappropriate” for local audiences.

PEMRA Responds: No Jurisdiction Over Digital-Only Content:

In response to the flood of complaints, the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) issued a statement on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). The authority clarified that it does not have oversight over content distributed solely through social media or streaming platforms.

“PEMRA’s regulatory scope is limited to licensed television broadcasters,” the statement read. “Content that airs exclusively on digital platforms does not fall under our regulatory purview.”

This response has brought attention to a significant loophole in Pakistan’s media laws, which currently do not regulate internet-based streaming content in the same way they govern traditional TV channels.

Ayesha Omar in the Spotlight:

At the center of the storm is Ayesha Omar, a household name in Pakistan’s entertainment industry. While some viewers admire her for taking on a daring and unconventional project, others have harshly criticized her for endorsing what they view as socially and morally inappropriate content.

Her presence as host has intensified discussions around celebrity responsibility and the influence of popular figures in shaping cultural narratives.

The controversy surrounding Lazawaal Ishq has evolved beyond a single program. It now represents a broader societal tug-of-war between modernism and tradition. For many younger, digitally savvy viewers, the show marks a bold step toward diverse storytelling formats. For others, it symbolizes an erosion of cultural values.

PEMRA’s clarification may have put to rest immediate calls for censorship, but the deeper debate remains unresolved. As digital platforms continue to disrupt traditional media norms, the lack of clear regulatory guidelines for online content is likely to remain a contentious issue.
