Legendary comedian Lehri remembered on his 13th death anniversary

KARACHI: Thirteen years have passed since the beloved comedian Lehri, a towering figure of Pakistan’s golden film era, bid farewell to his fans. Yet, his witty one-liners, impeccable comic timing, and iconic dialogues continue to echo in the hearts of cine-goers across generations.

Born as Safirullah Siddiqui, Lehri was a master of subtle, intelligent comedy. He brought smiles to countless faces through a career that spanned over three decades and included more than 200 films. His work wasn’t just entertainment it became a benchmark for tasteful humor in South Asian cinema.

Lehri began his artistic journey with radio and stage, but it was the 1965 film “Anokhi” that shot him to instant stardom. With every role that followed whether in classics like “Bedari,” “Andaleeb,” “Kaneez,” “Devar Bhabi,” “Dillagi,” or “Dil Mera Dharkan Teri” he cemented his place as the most refined comedic voice in Pakistani cinema.

What set Lehri apart was his unique ability to deliver humor with grace and restraint, He wasn’t loud or over-the top; he was effortlessly funny a quality that earned him not just laughter, but respect.

Lehri remains the only comedian in the country’s film history to be awarded the prestigious Nigar Award twelve times a record that still stands. His contribution to cinema was also recognized by the Government of Pakistan, which honored him with the Pride of Performance in 1996.

Lehri passed away on 13 September 2012, at the age of 83, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire generations of performers. Though the man is no longer with us, the warmth of his humor and the brilliance of his performances live on immortalized on screen and cherished in memory.
