KARACHI: Eyewitnesses reported that the tragedy began when one of the workers descended into a manhole to begin cleaning and quickly cried out for help after experiencing breathing difficulties. In a desperate attempt to rescue him, his father and brother also entered the manhole only for all three to succumb to toxic gases.

A fourth individual, who also tried to assist, was later pulled out by residents and shifted to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

Residents claimed that the workers were contracted by the Karachi Water Corporation for a cleaning job and were reportedly offered Rs. 15,000 in total for the task. Locals further alleged that no safety equipment, such as ropes, masks, or harnesses, was provided at the time of the incident.

“There were Water Corporation vehicles at the scene, but not a single worker had safety gear. This is criminal negligence,” said one local resident while speaking to the media.

Police officials at the scene confirmed the deaths and stated that a probe into the incident is underway.

“Initial findings suggest the men died due to exposure to toxic gases inside the manhole. Further investigation is being conducted to determine responsibility,” a police spokesperson said.
