KARACHI: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast heavy downpours in Karachi on tomorrow, warning of possible urban flooding in low-lying areas.

According to PMD spokesperson Anjum Nazir, the ongoing monsoon system over the city has intensified into a “deep depression,” which is one stage short of a tropical cyclone.

He said the weather system is currently centered over Tharparkar and remains active on land, with the potential to trigger strong winds at speeds of 60 to 70 kilometers per hour.

Anjum Nazir said that the monsoon system causes severe torrential rains. In the afternoon, there may be torrential rains in Karachi. Tomorrow the system will pass near the city, and the situation in Karachi may be bad.

The spokesperson added Karachi’s weak infrastructure could lead to waterlogging on major roads and inundation in low-lying areas. Citizens have been advised to avoid unsafe structures and remain indoors during intense rainfall. He said that during the entire spell, Karachi may receive more than 100 mm of rainfall.
